I’M TRYING TO LOVE GERMS, by Bethany Barton, Viking Books for Young Readers, Nov. 7, 2023, Hardcover, $18.99 (ages 4-8)
Travel into the microscopic world of germs and discover lots of good — and bad — things about these microscopic organisms in I’m Trying to Love Germs, by Bethany Barton.
This book is covered in germs! But to be fair, so are we. Did you know that there are more viruses and bacteria on Earth than there are stars in the known universe? Learn all about the microbes in and on our bodies that help us survive, the ones that don’t, and everything in between. —Synopsis provided by Viking Books for Young Readers
Bethany Barton’s semi-interactive look at microscopic organisms is full of information and humor. From microbes to pathogens, Barton hits on the helpful and harmful aspects. Her ink, watercolor and photoshop illustrations are a mix of silly and educational, providing enough factual information to engage with the ick factor without being totally grossed out.
As we head into the cold and flu season, I’m trying to Love Germs is a great resource for parents who want to give their kids the right information on viruses and the importance of washing hands. And for further exploration, there’s a list of excellent resources at the end.
I’m Trying to Love Germs is a great resource at home or at school.
