LOVE ON PAPER, by Danielle Parker, Joy Revolution, Jan. 21, 2025, Hardcover, $19.99 (young adult)
Writing rivals must play nice during a prestigious writing retreat in Love on Paper, a YA romance by Danielle Parker.
Macy Descanso is a writer. Who cares if her bestselling-author mother pulled some strings to get her into a prestigious writing retreat? Macy belongs here. Even when the coordinators unexpectedly announce that this year’s theme is romance, Macy—a total cynic—is up for the challenge.
But she’s not prepared for her critique partner to be fellow publishing nepo baby Caleb Bernard. While Caleb may be what most romance writers would describe as “swoony,” he’s off-limits, because the Descansos and Bernards have beef.
With a chance at publication at their fingertips, though, Macy and Caleb have to put aside their issues. But is four weeks enough time to fight through writer’s block, step out of their parents’ shadows, and find the courage to create their own love story? —Synopsis provided by Joy Revolution
Love on Paper is a slow-burn romance that is slow to get started but is ultimately rewarding in the end. The pacing and character development in the first third is sluggish, not enough to dissuade me from finishing the novel.
Macy comes alive when she opens herself to new possibilities. And so does the book. What the synopsis doesn’t mention is a mystery left behind by a famous author who has recently died. That mystery is what spurs the action forward and helps Macy’s walls come down.
There’s a lot of growth that happens, but not without some pain and misunderstanding. Although not everything is resolved, I particularly enjoyed the story arc with Macy’s mom.
While not perfect, Love on Paper is a cute romance that will get you in the mood for love.
