“ZOOZICAL,” by Judy Sierra, illustrated by Marc Brown, Knopf, Aug. 9, 2011, $17.99 (ages 4-8)
The midwinter doldrums have arrived at the zoo. Blustery winds and frosty snow have kept families home. And the lack of visitors has made the zoo’s inhabitants grumpy.
Just when it seems like nothing will go right, a very small hippo and a kangaroo start hip-hopping all over the zoo. As the two tap and rap and twirl their feet, all the animals begin to rock to their rollicking beat.
The animals decide to show case their talents — born singers and dancers and acrobats. They learn the music and make posters, costumes and scenery. The excitement spreads, and soon, families start rushing to the zoo, despite the snow.
But the big question too be answered is, will the show be a success? You’ll have to tune in to find out.
“ZooZical” is riotously fun, with animals taking on human characteristics as they prepare for their musical. They never completely give up their spots, though, making a delightful mix that will have children laughing.
Author Judy Sierra’s rhythmical text guides young readers from one page to the next, and illustrator Marc Brown, of the Arthur series fame, creates loveable characters that feel familiar and accessible. Kids will want to put on their own musical after reading “ZooZical.”
