If you have children, or know children or were once a child, then you most likely know who Margaret Wise Brown is. Or you at least know of her most popular books — Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunny.
This spring, Silver Dolphin Books reintroduced readers to some of the author’s lesser-known titles with the Margaret Wise Brown Classics collection. The Diggers, Sleep Tight Sleepy Bears, and Count to 10 with a Mouse are among the first books in the series to be released.
DIGGERS (MARGARET WISE BROWN CLASSICS), by Margaret Wise Brown and Antoine Corbineau, Silver Dolphin Books, March 19, 2019, Hardcover, $12.99 (ages 3-5)
Our favorite of the three books follows animals, people and machines as they dig holes of varying sizes. My 5-year-old is a bit old for this, both on a reading level and subject matter, but she still enjoyed the illustrations.
SLEEP TIGHT, SLEEPY BEARS (MARGARET WISE BROWN CLASSICS), by Margaret Wise Brown and Julie Clay, Silver Dolphin Books, March 19, 2019, Hardcover, $12.99 (ages 3-5)
A baby bear mimics its parent as it stretches, yawns and gets ready for bed in this sweet bedtime story. I wasn’t even going to show this one to my daughter, but she’s adopted it as well, reading it in the car and then again at bedtime. It’s a sweet story with charming illustrations.
COUNT TO 10 WITH A MOUSE (MARGARET WISE BROWN CLASSICS), by Margaret Wise Brown and Kirsten Richards, Silver Dolphin Books, March 19, 2019, Hardcover, $12.99 (ages 3-5)
“There once was a mouse no bigger than a mole, who lived in a round place that he called a hole.” The mouse tries to count, but needs to learn how. Readers follow the mouse as he runs through the book counting fish, monkeys and butterflies before ending up at the clock that strikes 9, and the mouse runs down the clock. With each turn of the page the mouse ducks through the “hole” into a new scene. This makes the book feel a bit more interactive, and the illustrations are delightful.
